We were commissioned to create a series of promotional material for the Enterpise Zone at Sheffield University. They wanted something that was visually appealing to students and would stand out from other Enterprise / material, but remain true to the Sheffield University branding guidelines.
We challenged illustrator Andy Nesbitt to produce a series of images based on the topics covered by printed material, which would be used as the main focal point for the design. We chose to use illustrations because they can convey a more specific message than a generic photo, as well as something that can be done in a way that will appeal to the student market.
Previous material had used very flat colours, and we were keen to create something with a bit more depth to it. This was achieved by using the blocks of colour as semi-transparent sections were sections of the illustration could be seen underneath.
We also had to design the material in such a way that it fit in with the University's branding guidelines, however these extend mainly to the font choice and logo placement, so we had a reasonable degree of freedom.
The material that we created lead to increased interest from the students as well as filling the courses which were being advertised.
